Gray Area Drinker Coaching
Recently, I woke up in a hotel room after supporting my husband at a business reception and colleague dinner the previous night and I was hang-over free and had zero anxiety about if and how I had embarrassed him the night before. I felt free.
I have not been hungover or embarrassing due to alcohol in almost 10 years and yet I remember those mornings. I remember waking up in the middle of the night after binge drinking - sweating, my anxiety through the roof, embarrassed, self-loathing, full of regret and shame. It was horrible!
I would rein it in and not drink for long periods, but the day would always come when I did it all over again. Why? Because, I was not being honest with myself, was not dealing with the underlying anxiety, crippling perfectionism and people pleasing that led me to self-medicate with alcohol.
I share this because, today, I feel so free from alcohol and yet I remember those hard mornings. Those mornings when I laid in bed trying to remember the night before filled with remorse. I still remember and so, I fortify myself with what I know works for me- meditation, yoga, journaling, reaching out to AF friends, grounding and centering myself, listening to my body and how it is feeling and what it needs, keeping a daily gratitude list, seeking joy.
This AF journey is a daily practice and it can be hard at times, but it is never as hard as the mornings after a binge drinking night...never. Mostly this daily practice is beautiful, interesting, thought provoking and joyful.
If you are new to this journey or struggling today just know that I see you. I get it. It took me 17 years of stopping and starting to get to these last 9 hangover free years.
You do not have to be physically addicted to alcohol to walk away. You do not have to drink every day or hit some horrible bottom to give up alcohol. Like me, you can just feel in your gut that alcohol is no longer serving you. You can wake up after a night of binge drinking and say – Enough!
If you know in your gut that alcohol is a negative in your life. If you have spent way too much energy attempting to moderate your drinking over the years – you may be a gray area drinker. You may want to stop drinking, but you keep picking up a drink again because – “it’s not so bad” or “it’s not like I am addicted” or “everyone around me drinks like I do and they don’t seem to have a problem”.
I get it. I have been there. And I can help you make this change and start your alcohol free journey.
So how do you make this change and create a fulfilling life without alcohol?
